I was using bitdefender until recently, until for some reason it decided it wanted to replace the root certificate in firefox, which resulted in it... Not working anymore.
At this point, my computer has had more instances of being screwed up by antivirus programs than actual viruses.
As others have said, Windows Defender is okay now and less likely to cause issues like this, though I do keep a copy of Malwarebytes handy just in case.

At the start of Windows 8.1, the built-in protection was adequate, but then it ended up lagging behind products from other companies. I know they brought it up to date for Windows 10, but is it definitely the case that they've continued doing so as new threats are discovered?

For context, I'm just trying to be sure I'm doing what I'm supposed to. My desktop currently runs Avast, whereas everything else I have runs Windows Defender.
OS: Windows 10 64 bit Professional

If you use Chrome (or Firefox with experimental sandboxing enabled), keep your OS up to date, and use an adblocker, Windows Defender is sufficient.

Yeah, I was thinking of something along the lines of the emulator keeping track of how many times the error occurs each session and if it occurs 2, 3 or more times it will provide a different dialog box with the option to suppress further warnings (I guess this option could always be present, since that would be simpler).
Computer specifications:
Windows 10 Pro x64 | Ryzen 3700X | ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero WiFi Motherboard | 16GB 3600MHz | Geforce 1070Ti | Corsair AX760 PSU
