Asus actually did this with their nehalem/westmere and sandy/ivy bridge boards too. Unlocking multipliers on low end chipsets even when it was outside of Intel specifications. Intel finally got around to fixing this loophole with recent steppings of haswell which include a microcode update to disable the feature at the cpu level.
