Are there any "summer internship" type open source schemes?

I looked a bit into the google summer of code, it sounds pretty much like the perfect thing... thx for help.

Edit: I was actually planning to make an educational equation solving Android app (YOU are the solver), and one of the mentor organizations is all about " transforming education through technology"... I smell two dead birds with the same stone markings
