I'm not sure if this even makes sense... anyway I hope to do some programming work in the summer, it's not important to earn money, but preferably something I can put on my resume (I will have a computer science bachelor degree then). So while I could try and just get involved in something, if there was some kind of "internship" training scheme, where you get handed some beginner tasks, that would be a bit simpler than trying to jump in by myself...

What about google summer of code?

GSoC isn't really beginner-level though. There's Google Code-in for that but it's for high school students if I remember correctly.

The nice thing with open source is that you don't need this kind of "internship" programs. Just pick a project you like, find a bug that you think you can fix (hint: start by improving documentation?), submit a patch. Repeat. From there, get a good relationship with the development team, ask them for more tasks, etc.

Beginners/interns shouldn't be writing documentation, bad docs are worse than none at all.

You can make the exact same argument for code.

Code is more likely to get reviewed and also tends to be more obvious when it's wrong. If you let interns handle your documentation, you'll probably end up with something like MSDN.

I looked a bit into the google summer of code, it sounds pretty much like the perfect thing... thx for help.

Edit: I was actually planning to make an educational equation solving Android app (YOU are the solver), and one of the mentor organizations is all about " transforming education through technology"... I smell two dead birds with the same stone markingsWink
