I currently have a AMD Athlon X2 6000+ and want to upgrade my cpu. I am getting really crappy frame rates when running on my native resolution(1920x1200). I was thinking the

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX

or

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT55TFBGRBOX

Are these 2 CPU good for dolphin?

I am also thinking of getting a Nvidia gts460 video card. Thanks.

I personally just got a i7 920 few days ago, overclocked it from 2,67 to 3,7ghz. It now runs most games @ a full 60fps. But some games, like 'no more heroes' still have trouble running full speed.

Seeing as the phenom II 955 doesn't get that much worse results as the i7 920, I'd say it's a very good low-cost solution. I would however advise you to get a good mainboard (asus, evga) and a powerful cooler, and overclock your cpu as much as possible. Especially because its not that expensive anyways Wink

(There are loads of tutorials on youtube and general internet about overclocking any specific cpu and mainboard.)

I hope this helps.

Dolphin only need 2 cores at this moment and is a very cpu intensive program(more mhz=more fps). Video card is the second most important component, i recommend you this card:

Quote:(more mhz=more fps).

That's very rarely true. You can only use clock rates to compare the performance of two identical chips. For example a 3GHz athlon X2 will get beaten to a living pulp by a 2GHz core 2 duo despite the lower clock rate. Likewise with certain cpus and settings the bottleneck will be the memory bandwidth and raising the core clock will have almost no affect on performance (rare though).

@akskiller

Yes. AMD cpus can be a good choice for dolphin. They might not be as fast as the high end intels but they are also cheaper and offer good performance per dollar.

Yes, the architecture is very important too, of course.

Are those card generally good? Like not just dolphin like PC games as well?

If your main reason for upgrade is the framerate in native 1920x1200 resolution, otherwise you are satisfied, just get a good single gpu videocard, since the videocard is the main bottleneck in high resolution and graphic settings.

For dolphin a 5670 is fine if you keep away from SSAA and high internal resolution but for pc games you will definitely want something more high end like a GTX 460.
