AR codes with Dolphin

I've been looking around everywhere I can think for the past 30 minutes trying to get AR codes to work in Melee for Dolphin. I have a pretty new laptop, so I haven't messed anything up on it, and I have the newest stable release of Dolphin (4.0.2). I right click NTSC melee, and it's got this big list of AR codes; I pick them, and the game crashes.

Some people say you have to delete the lines that have 08000000, and that didn't work. I tried deleting just the 08000000 and not the whole line, and that doesn't work either. Doing either of those things at least doesn't crash the game when I hit a button, but it doesn't make the codes work.

Yes I have cheats enabled.

People have also said that the codes that come with dolphin are bad, and to get them somewhere else; I can't find them anywhere else. Other sites only have a handful of codes, and most aren't even in a format that dolphin recognizes.

The most annoying part is that I'm on Windows 8 (jesus this OS sucks), and so I can't edit the .ini files, as they are in program files and apparently admin account isn't good enough for it to save the file from notepad; I have to copy the .ini file to my docs, edit it, then copy it back and overwrite with admin. It's a royal pain.

If anyone can help me with either problem, that would be much appreciated. Maybe I can screenshare in G+ with somebody who knows what they're doing?

Everywhere I look is outdated tutorials; even the official dolphin references that I've been looking at are for old versions of dolphin. This is WAY harder than it should be.

in 4.0.2 Dolphin isn't setup to work with multiple revisions of Melee for AR codes. Depending on your revision of Melee you have, you need different codes, and you really need to manually find them for your revision.

Which revision works best for the codes, then? I don't mind a few minor changes to my version, I'm not hardcore. I don't really want to have to go find codes, as I said, other sites seem to be lacking (dunno where dolphin gets all this stuff)

Well, if you have revision 2 (the most common version of Melee) then you don't need to worry in any of the latest development builds of Dolphin.

First of all, you can find cheats for all revisions of Smash Bros here: http://gamehacking.org/?sys=ngc&q=smash+bros

The majority are in ARMAX format, which means they are encrypted. As far as I know, Dolphin supports both encrypted and decrypted cheats, but incase it does not, you can use GCNcrypt to decrypt these codes yourself.

By checking the Info tab in Smash Bros properties, you should see which revision your copy of the game is.

Deleting the first line (with the 08000000) is only required for certain titles under rev 6xxx/7xxx to my knowledge. However, this line is not required for Dolphin under any circumstances as it is only an activator/identifier line to bypass the system along with a Master code when using a real AR device on real hardware.

As for opening the .ini file and editing, can you not run notepad.exe as admin and then drop and drag the .ini file into it to directly edit it? Just a suggestion, as I've never used Win8.

The thing is that he was asking about the cheats included with Dolphin. It's easy enough to find more cheats; Dolphin 4.0 doesn't have the capabilities to separate cheats per revision of a game, where as the latest dev versions do.

I see, I wasn't think about that. I generally hack the codes for myself if the supplied codes for some reason would not work, which I only recall ever happening with REmake. (Where it was the identifier line before each code that caused the crash.) My post should still suffice in solving the problem with this specific game.

Are there really that many games that have multiple revisions on the gamecube, though?

Two that I know of. Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Party 7. There are likely others though.
