Khronos had an update about Vulkan today and part of the news is that Apple is no longer a Vulkan working group participant and hasn't indicated that they will use Vulkan in either iOS or OS X. From Anandtech's analysis:

"Apple, for what it’s worth, has been absent from the Khronos announcements. As the company is pushing Metal on both mobile and desktop, it looks unlikely that they will be adopting Vulkan any time soon. In which case Vulkan wouldn’t quite match OpenGL ES 3.0’s universal reach due to Apple’s reliance on proprietary APIs."

So what does this mean for future OS X support with Dolphin going forward? I haven't seen much support for creating a Metal backend up to this point. Is being stuck with OpenGL 4.1 indefinitely a viable option?

That doesn't mean they won't be supporting Vulkan, it just means that they decided to work on their own universal API instead.

Once they figure out that most devs are skipping OSX support because they want to use Vulkan, they'll implement it faster than Steve Ballmer can shout "Developers"

There's no evidence Microsoft intends to directly support Vulkan either, as far as I know. You might as well ask "what is the future of Dolphin in Windows?"

Oh come on, it's pretty obvious that when it's about Apple it only works on their hardware  Tongue

So if Vulkan is the successor to OpenGL, would that mean OGL would get replaced by Vulkan eventually in Dolphin?

Good of vulkan that it reduce gpu overload and this will make gpu intensive games faster and allow more enhancements at once this would help a lot mobile devices wich vulkan complete humiliates ogl es in the latest test while ogl was suffering with framerate vulkan barely. Show any slowdown
