I don't know what's wrong with me, I'm going through a phase of some kind.
Suddenly I feel a strong urge building something really extreme, the most extreme build I have ever done.

If there was a girl involved I would gladly spend the money on something for her but, I'm divorced and single, and want to do something before it's too late.
And god knows I love computers.
One day you might be in a completely different situation when you don't have the opportunity to do what you want when you want it.

I am ambivalent to this whole situation.

I have spoken to a close friend and he thought that I was out of my mind with these ideas and that I should be happy with what I got.

I'm beginning to understand what you said NaturalViolence, deep down it's not about the need for it just buying yourself some short happiness.
Complete waste of money really.

Have you ever considered the idea of SAVING that money instead? If you stop blowing $3,000+ every year on hardware upgrades you should be able to build some retirement savings pretty quickly. I'm guessing you're long done with college (no idea how old you are) so at least you don't have to save it all for graduate school like me.

I kinda feel your pain there. I was dumped HARD recently and I just can't take this one girl of my head. So I bought a new PC to play the heck out of everything I can to distract me because I felt the urge. It kinda works, when I'm playing I'm really happy there, but as soon as I'm not, I remember her and all that. And it's been 3 MONTHS ALREADY. Goddamnit, man.

I say if you can afford to spend the money on something better and you're enjoying yourself building/using this hardware, do it. It is a bit of a waste to keep upgrading so soon after your last upgrade, but that's your choice. Enjoy it now while you can, when you get together with some other woman in the future, you're probably not going to have the time or money to do this sort of thing anymore.

I'm saving quite much every month both for retirement and on a down payment for an apartment or a house, the money for spending on "fun" things is a whole different account.

And you're right I'm long done with college, turning 26 this year.
Beginning a new job really soon.

I'm starting to think that this whole thing is the start of an early 30's crisis.
Some guy's would probably go out and buy the car or motorcycle of their dreams, me I'm thinking of CPU's and computers.

Hahahahaha, no.

This kind of behavior is far more common in young people, and every person on the planet is vulnerable to it. I myself only manage to control it by constantly reminding myself "how the f*ck are you going to pay for graduate school?". All you need to do is ask yourself WHY you're buying something before you do it. Do you have a logical/rational reason for getting it or are you just getting it to satisfy the urge to buy it? And what else could you do with that money? Ask yourself those two questions before you buy something. If you have nothing better to do with the money and you have a good reason for buying it then go ahead. Note: "Because it makes me happy" is a legitimate reason for buying something, just don't let it turn into compulsive behavior (for example buying a new car every year just because you always buy a new car every year).

Totally. It's not cool when having a relationship means you have to throw back things you like to do. The majority of people do that, but I really think it's wrong. If I have to change for somebody to like me, then well, screw it. I'm fine the way I am.

Though my ex loved games as much as I do. ç-ç
