Also, when you say early Xbox One controllers, you mean there's more than one variant, or just Xbox One controllers in general? If it's the former, how can I tell whether they're the latest variant or not? I just did a quick Google search, and I noticed somebody claiming that he was experiencing input lag with a PS4 controller. Any comments on this?

Yes, there are variants and model numbers (which I don't know by heart). I know that the variant originally included with the Xbox One S and later is safe (as in, it works fine). As for playing 2D platformers with it (I play Megaman X DiVE), I have no trouble doing so. The most commonly cited concern is the D-Pad position, since PlayStation players won't be used to it. However, it's the same as the GameCube controller (and the D-Pad is larger than the GameCube's), so you shouldn't have any problem with games originally designed for the GameCube controller (other than the ABXY buttons' relative positions, of course, since you'll either have to map them differently and risk being confused by hitting X when the screen says B, for example, or map them by letter and have to retrain your muscle memory if you're used to the GameCube or Wii Classic controller).
As for PS4 controller input lag: I find that it varies by phone. I had occasional stutters on my old LG G7, but I haven't experienced that on my current OnePlus 9 Pro as of yet.
