Anyone into to drum 'n' bass music? I know what your thinking and the answer is No, I don't mean the techno crap that America puts out and makes your ear bleed and not the kind that makes you pass out by staring at lasers indefinitely. I'm talking about the European melodic type, also called liquid drum n bass. Been into it since I was in high school and yes I'm old now ha! (Well not that old) Anyway was wondering if anyone in the forums is internationally based with this interest.

* Back in the day, it was called 'Jungle' (classic old-school DnB, probably the best).
* Then it evolved into 'Drum & Bass' (modern-style DnB, still good) and the more hardcore 'Drill & Bass'.
* Finally, it 'devolved' into that horrible, Techno-derived, highly repetitive garbage known as 'Tech Step' with its countless subgenres (the most disgusting being 'Dark Step'). Where's the barf bag ? (blurrgh!!!)
* The current trend is mixing 'Tech Step' with even worse Elektro-derived crap known as 'Bass / Dubstep' (so toxic, you need ear plugs, LOL).

For quality old-school mixes (with crazy beats), check out "Beatgem" on YouTube

You've practically summed up the history of it, I first started listening to it when it was back then called jungle, so you can calculate how the years have passed by me. But then it all started to go downhill in my opinion after that with soooo many sub-genres. Was never into all those different types, always sticked to the atmospheric and liquid. Good things coming out of Europe over the last decade or so and always followed them. True story, I got introduced to it when I first played a game called Wipeout for the PS1, it was released in 1995. This where it started for me and ever since then never listened to any other type of music, at least not on my car radio, everything else is just crap to me. I have a very particular taste to my ears and if it sounds horrible its horrible.

Bassdrive.com is what I listen to, good stuff there coming out internationally including UK and surrounding countries and South America.

Your name says it all: (U)MK3 fan (PS1 version), probably 33 years old Smile

If you prefer that type of sound (light, melodic, "gamey", liquid and with lots of variations), then I highly recommend listening to the R4 soundtrack (it's also from the PS1, so it has to be good Big Grin).

Possibly the best soundtrack ever created for a racing game. It's "pure gold".
A perfect blend of light, melodic jazz and old-school D'n'B. There are some techno/dance tracks in there as well, but even those sound 1000x better than any crap you hear on the TV/Radio/Internet today.

Also available on YouTube (check it out).

Actually first ever MK3, SNES version, and yes 33 years old.

R4 soundtrack is really good listening to it right now, the game was also good too. I like to revisit old classic games just to listen to their music, that's my general purpose in retro gaming really. That intro scene to that R4 game hits me everytime I go back and play it. Another soundtrack that stood out for me was the intro scene to a game called Ergheiz (PS1) made by Squaresoft (at that time).
