When I say Dolphin Team, a mean it as a collective noun for anyone who's made a published change for/under the project, past and present, big and small. That's the way I was brought into the OSS comunnity where every little change was encouraged, especially for newcomers. It was used as a model for greater participation amongst users of the project. There was still a distinction between actual developers, maintainers, and others of influence, but our culture had a pretty fluid "team" that consisted of frequents and floaters.
A request to all users caring about supporting developers

A few points:
Regarding logo/icons license: I know we want to annoy mamario, but making Dolphin into more of a licensing hell and restricting redistribution of our software for everyone is not the right way to do it. Trademark: I have no idea how trademark law works in Europe. I would think we implicitly gave him a license to use our trademark when we authorized his website in the first place and did not defend the trademark for 3 years. Ad money: we're currently making around 200-250 euros/month on average (excluding the large Dolphin 4.0 spike) on dolphin-emu.org. His website has more ads in the critical path and I estimate it gets around 4-5x the number of visits we get (because it's the first result on a lot of google searches). I'll let you multiply these two numbers together and realize why he won't cooperate. FWIW, here is what we're doing with our ad money 09-25-2013, 10:13 PM
@delroth - If the icons/logos weren't under a permissive license (do whatev in MaJoR's words) we could just say everyone but mamario can use them. It's a targeted, prickish move, but saves everyone else a licensing hell. But I don't know why we are talking sbout this still as if it were a valid option at all; it was shot down long ago :/
If we can implicitly grant him a license to trademark, we can probably explicitly deny him it in writing. We would have to legally establish ourselves as the present holders, though, again costing time and money. If the old site were to fall to DDOS from Russian hackers, you wouldn't see me crying (not that I know anyone capable that or implying we should do anything illegal). Currently praying his webhost server gets hit with a natural disaster or something.
That's still a non-free license and would create problems for Linux distributions to package.
Don't pray for his webhost datacenter going into flames, overlord.dolphin-emu.org is hosted in the same datacenter (not forums/wiki/www though, these are in france). 09-25-2013, 11:34 PM

I believe you understand that copyright and license are separate. Everything is copyrighted including the source code. But under GPL license both program and code are free to be distributed as long as the conditions are met. 09-25-2013, 11:48 PM
I still can't believe he updated the site with 4.0, despite all the hate, i'd always had a thought at the back of my mind, maybe this guy got bedridden with a disease, is in a coma, or he even died but here we were calling him a cheapskate, guess i can lose the sympathy from now on.

@xemnas - What do you think a binary is? It's the compiled form of source code, essentially a derivative work. It's still code (assembly generated by the compiler) which is all the GPL covers.
mamario is distibuting icons, since that's part of 4.0 download (browse through it yourself and have a look). He can distribute the binary as much as he likes under the GPL's conditions, but the icons aren't covered by the GPL, they're covered under MaJoR's ad-hoc DoWhatev license.
http://statstool.com shows how well he is doing, or should I say steeling.
Anyone try a dmca? http://www.google.com/dmca.html or is that just for copyrights? suggested from here http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!...IQwX45kAAo main page Working controllers |
