A Little Respect For The Geeks Maybe?

Hello,

I'm a Geek, and older one at that, Slackware Linux user too, used just about every big named distro and then some, and of course have messed with Dolphin in Windows, but Slackware is my weapon of choice, been a Slacker a very long time.

So why the title of this post as it is? I mean no disrespect to anyone, everyone can do as they please, but if you're a geek, and you've been around, you should know that a 1000 post requirement is not like the Internet Norm... This is actually very extreme.

I believe in giving everyone the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise, not treating everyone as guilty until they prove otherwise.

So I'll blow my own horn! How would you know anything about me, unless I was known by nick among you? Well I'm not, I'm just a user, but a Linux user, that over many years, more in the beginning of the project reported lots of bugs, and all these bugs fixed, thanks to my help reporting them. Also as a Linux user, with the Open Source Mentality, of course I love to help fellow geeks and report bugs and make things better.

So now when it's my time turn needing help, I finally all these years later come to the forum in seek of help and what do I see? Hmm 1000 posts and I can seek help. WOW talk about a slap in the face to the Real Geeks out there!

Anyhow, do what you want, I'm just really disappointed to see a community treat it's fellow geeks like this. WHY? Because I don't see I'm on some Dalnet Sex Channel, with the Spamming and Trolling flying everywhere for such an extreme requirement.

Yes, of course a small requirement of posts, and the Mods watch over to weed them out, to see who's looking really legit, so after just even 20-30 posts someone can jump in and seek help and participate.

The reason we have that post count requirement for making a new thread is because each game is supposed to have one thread only. Practically every game already has a thread, so not being able to create new threads doesn't limit you from doing anything (other than breaking the rule that each game is supposed to have one thread only, which would be easy for new users to accidentally do if we hadn't had the post limit). If you want to ask for help or help others in those subforums, just do it in the existing thread for each game. There is no post count requirement for posting in an existing thread.

The console forums are curated, and not for just random users who join for support to create threads in. The console sections already have threads for almost every game in them! Before, we had dozens of threads for talking about a specific game, so we moved to a curated model with threads already created for games and users are meant to ask for help in those. And they have the wiki information attached in the first post, so most common issues are addressed before a user ever posts!

If we didn't have the 1000 post requirement, we'd absolutely have all manner of random support threads in those sections, and all curation attempts would be meaningless.

Just to address this, we don't gatekeep here. You do not have to have any level of skill or any "identity" to be welcome here or get support here. We accept everyone, and as such, we're not going to segregate our userbase because some random person on the internet thinks they are so "geek" that they are entitled to not be funneled through our typical user support channels!

And so we're clear, not giving you an entitled position is not disrespect. We're treating you the same way we treat everyone else.

@JosJuice, but also on many forums, and I don't see why this one should be any exception, when there's an old post, sometime it just gets left by the side, and newer posts get the attention, so maybe that isn't the norm here then.

@MayImilae, actually, sorry you misunderstood the picture I was trying to paint over being a Geek, I am certainly not looking for, or asking for any special treatment, or anyone else for that matter. I just meant as a Geek, someone who's been around in computing, I was only trying to explain the 1000 post requirement isn't typical, this high a level is all. Sorry for any misunderstanding...

Yes there are threads all over the place, everyone gets that, so that's like saying, we don't want people making new posts over for the same thing posted before, and I understand that...

But sometimes there isn't the same thing going on, and how long should we be asking members to search for, to make sure someone hasn't already made the same post before...

I personally run Slackware, how many can we say are Linux users on the forum? I'm not the majority, and Wii is cross platform.

Because while I might be making a post that says; 'Camera Stutter In Xenoblade Chronicles' and in Windows you've seen many posts on this, doesn't mean the solution is the same in Linux, so it's looking like a one size fits all posting solution going on for the moment...

So maybe an OS Specific Forum Section would be helpful...

One thing I forgot to mention, old posts still running, because of this posting idea, bumping up old posts, just asking in the same posts etc., Then this is going against the Old Post Bumping sort of unwritten forum rule that is common place across the internet, something I forgot to mention, why we also create new posts...

You don't have to search for others who have posted about the same thing before, you just have to search for the thread with the game name in it. Or, you can create a thread in the Support section if you don't want the one-thread-per-game layout.

Most problems are actually not OS-specific (unless you're using Android, but we do have a subforum specifically for Android).

I'm not sure what you're actually trying to say with this, but the way we treat it here is: Bumping old threads is totally fine and accepted in the GameCube, Wii and Triforce subforums, but don't do it in General Discussion, Support or other subforms where regular users can create new threads.

As for the example you pointed out, trust me, the reason that people unnecessarily bump threads like that isn't because they're used to doing it in the GameCube/Wii/Triforce subforums.

Actually I apologize I didn't make the point very clear, so please keep reading and especially my other reply, hopefully you will now see the importance that is being overlooked...

What are you saying? The Linux VS Windows Device Driver Model is not the same;

Just the X Windows System in and of itself is a problem all unto it's own that does not exist in Windows, so when I might have a stutter issue going on in the game, that everyone might see in Windows as a driver issue, it could simply be X causing the issue that isn't even related to the same problems in Windows.

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear on this in the beginning, I would think it would help you as developers to have an "OS Forum Section" for Linux, OSX, Android, to keep better track on it...

Well for starters you're being negative and taking my comments the wrong way, I said I didn't mean anyone any disrespect...

I only meant the term "Geek" as an understanding of the level of experience, not being a newbie. So would Geeks not know how a forum works?

The 1000 post rule is not making it easy for someone starting out, because then you have to go digging around looking for a post that relates to the problem you're having.

So let me give an example of what I did, what I'd assume anyone would do, just do a "Search" on the forum...

I searched for "Camera Stutter"

Next I just typed in Xenoblade Chronicles and then when I got the results searched in Firefox for the word "Camera" as an example...

At no time did I find a post relative to what I was looking for, this is the point I'm trying to make, that it's not always so easy to find a post on the same subject matter.

So out of forum respect, the way forums work, posts are in relative subject matter replies, otherwise this is considered hijacking posts...

I will say SORRY because I realize I should not of gone on so long and winded about all the Geek BS and my own personal story on that, but I didn't appreciate you laughing at me, as a Developer on the forum, you should of also realized that is considered trolling. No matter what you may do or anyone else, I don't troll towards other members, and sorry too if you thought this post of mine was like being a troll, some might consider it that.

I was just trying to be the proper geek around here, not posting in a post on a different subject matter like I see, or bumping up old posts...

The big thing is that's not how those forums work. Maybe it needs to be easier to search for various games, but, each game gets each one thread. But those threads are more or less for discussion about those games and documenting issues long term in the first post.

If you want support for a particular issue, then post in the support section like everyone else.

Camera stutter doesn't really sound like an issue in Dolphin though, it's probably something typical like shaders generation or an inefficient graphical drivers limiting things. Also, stuff like vsync can also cause it.
