Personally i like angry joe's rant:

Eww... Kotaku...
Anyway the Kinect never had me sold. It's more gimmick than game. In other news, WiiU sales are pretty low and the systems are being sold at a loss. The system is having a pretty bad game drought. And no, Pikmin 3 by itself isn't enough to change that equation. It's just one game; you usually need several more (unless you can manage a single killer-app level game). On the other hand, the 3DS is doing just fine (despite fears or exclamations a year ago that mobile phones would destroy its market). 08-14-2013, 12:59 AM
Yep, the Wii U will be the next Dreamcast.
Mobile phones are destroying handhelds and consoles. Atleast, in Japan. TL;DR: -Japanese mobile game industry (feature phone + smartphone) was $5.1 billion for 2012. -Japanese consoles/handhelds software + hardware was $4.6 billion for 2012. From NeoGAF We're doomed guys. 08-14-2013, 02:37 AM

Worldwide though, SW revenue was up for the 3DS though (HW went down). It's similar to how the GBA kept the company in good shape during the 6th Gen. At least it'll be a Dreamcast with SSB, MK, LoZ, and another "Xeno" title.
Seriously, I would have thought they knew this after being in this industry for so long. The system would sell if it had the software. Have something like F-Zero or Metroid available at Day 1 and they'd at least be in a better position today. I think they banked too much on 3rd Party support, but their 1st Party material plays a lot into how successful their systems have been. 08-14-2013, 05:06 AM
Shonumi Wrote:Eww... Kotaku... Agreed. Never link directly to kotaku. I hate giving them page views. They are the fox news of gaming. Shonumi Wrote:Anyway the Kinect never had me sold. It's more gimmick than game. Yup. And it's still bundled with the xbone making it $500. Unless they can kill the kinect completely and drop it down to $400 there is not a chance in hell that I'm buying it. Privacy was never really a concern for me with the kinect since if you think the government is monitoring you all you have to do is turn it off. I mean the console would normally be off while you're not playing anyways. Or if you're really that concerned just put a cloth over it or face it away from you while playing. Garteal Wrote:Yep, the Wii U will be the next Dreamcast. So it will get pulled off the market in two years, nearly bankrupt the company that made it, and force said company to stop manufacturing hardware entirely? I don't think so. Garteal Wrote:Mobile phones are destroying handhelds and consoles. Atleast, in Japan. This conclusion is based on a failed assumption that the people who play smartphone games are the same people who play console games. And that every smartphone game sold is a lost console game sale. They're two entirely different demographics that mostly don't interact. Console gaming is still growing at about the same rate it's been growing at for 5 years now. A new market is out and growing. It's capturing a new demographic and increasing total software sales by doing so. It's a larger industry because it has a larger demographic. This doesn't mean they can't coexist. I'm sick of these self-proclaimed industry analysts saying that smartphones are going to kill console gaming. They have no clue wtf they're talking about and clearly don't play video games.

The 3DS is not just doing well, it's doing fantastic. Last quarter was record breaking. Despite a slow start from the high launch price, if it can maintain this pace it will overtake Nintendo DS sales (for this period in it's life) within a year or so. The Nintendo DS was the most sold Nintendo system ever, soooo, I think the 3DS is doing ok. I got a 3DS XL in that quarter in fact, and just got my second game (Mario Kart 7). I love it to death; it's a great system.
It's ironic isn't it? Everyone said that handhelds were going to be swallowed by cell phones, yet it's the handheld that is doing so well right now. Goes to show just how stupid that was. Handheld games are very, very different from cell phone games, so there is no replacing going on. Of course, the 3DS alone isn't going to lead to a healthy Nintendo: they need the Wii U to do well. And that means games. We'll see if they can deliver. Intel Xeon w7-3465X OC | Asus Pro WS W790-E Sage SE | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 FE | 8x16GiB G-Skill Zeta R5 DDR5-6000 | Windows 11 23H2 | (details)
