Worst case scenario is that we wont see either consoles this year. Sony's president was also reported saying they wont announce the ps4 until Microsoft announce the 720 but now there is this playstation meeting on the 20th of February so we can still remain optimistic, however microsoft have remained silent.

Its been over 5 years for Sony and 7 years for microsoft, so someone really has to make a move. There were 7 years between the ps2 and the ps3 and 4 years between the Xbox and the xbox360. Thoughts?

EDIT: Whoops! forgot about the WiiU, i wonder why Nintendo is always forgotten in conversations like this Tongue

There've been a lot of leaks about both the Durango and Orbis.
So far, Orbis is more powerful than the Durango since it has a much faster memory.
If the leaked specs are true (kind of confirmed by devs/sources), then we'll (hopefully) be blown away by "next-gen".

I think (and hope) that they'll show off their consoles this e3 so that we can finally move on from this generation. It's been too long.

The Wii U is already selling at a loss and is very unsuccessful so far. Iwata may also resign if the company doesn't achieve a certain amount of cash for next year.
Quote:At an analysts' meeting on the 31st, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata (53) implied that there is a possibility that he may resign if he is unable to achieve 100 billion yen (US$1.09963 billion) in operating income for the next fiscal year.

The problem is: who's gonna say PS3 is dead? Nobody. I mean can PS4 really be better than PS3 ? Not sure. Moreover they have no real concurrence. Is WiiU really competitive with PS3? Not sure either

I believe for the ps2, sony kept publishing games for another 3-5 years or so, so we can expect the same. The WiiU is only mildly more powerful than the ps3 and 360, so in terms of performance the other 8th gen consoles should definitely beat it. We just have to wait for E3 like Garteal said or maybe this Playstation meeting on the 20th of february might yield results.

Looks like Orbis will be revealed on the 20th of February.
Quote:On February 20 a new PlayStation will be revealed (our sources have confirmed this morning, having tipped us off a few weeks back).

Interesting, although i'm not sure whether to believe it, 'tip-offs' have never been the best source for accurate news, we'll patiently wait for Feb 20 though.

I remember something along the lines that Sony said their PS3 was designed to be a "10 year system", whatever that really means. It makes sense when you look at the PS2, which you could still buy new at Best Buy last time I checked. The whole ecosystem of used and new games, controllers, accessories, is well supported here in the US and in many other countries, especially developing nations and markets. Perhaps this is Sony's aim for the PS3? It won't be altogether obsolete, but the PS4 will be their focus.

Except for the Tales series, Disgaea series, Valkyria Chronicles, and the singular Star Ocean title, neither the PS3 nor 360 offered me a lot of compelling J/S RPGs to play. Shame, since the PS2 had so many. The Wii, oth, has a load for me to play. My 360 is mostly there so I can play Halo though, and so will any "720" or whatever the official brand will be Big Grin

Fixed that for you. The PS3 was released in 2006 (except in europe).

They're corporations. They can and will do whatever generates the most profit. They will wait until the best possible opportunity is available. The Kinect/PSMove gimmicks didn't really catch on with developers, console sales are beginning to decline steeply, new SDKs and engines are being released that are not supported on the current gen of consoles due to outdated hardware (UE4), and the world economy is recovering. So the next 1-2 years is the ideal time.

Zee530 Wrote:EDIT: Whoops! forgot about the WiiU, i wonder why Nintendo is always forgotten in conversations like this Tongue

Because their hardware is a generation out of date, just like the Wii was.

LordVador Wrote:The problem is: who's gonna say PS3 is dead? Nobody.

Sony will. It's their console.

LordVador Wrote:I mean can PS4 really be better than PS3 ?

Obviously yes. Unless you're referring to sales. Using the word "better" in that sentence implies that you're talking about specs when I suspect that you are not.

LordVador Wrote:Moreover they have no real concurrence.

Explain.

LordVador Wrote:Is WiiU really competitive with PS3? Not sure either

So far yes.

It means exactly what it says. They're likely going to release the PS4 sometime around 2014. And devs will continue to support the ps3 with new games for another 2-3 years afterwards just like the ps2. So it will basically have a 10 year lifespan as far as software development is concerned, just like they promised.

The context from the article I read it from ("Missing in Action", EGM 243, Jan '11) was whether or not that lifespan really would be 10 years or perhaps something even longer. Would it be a lifespan where the PS4 is launched after the PS3's 10 year mark in 2016, Sony officially focuses on the new console, but the PS3 lingers on the market for years like the PS2 does/did, essentially lasting longer than 10 years? The other case would be something like what we might see later this year where the PS4 is launched before 2016, and by that time the PS3 has lingered on the market but begins to fade as it becomes irrelevant to gamers. Essentially, is it a set limited lifespan of 10 or so years, or does Sony potentially see it as a 10+ year system?

Of course. I meant most of us didn't consider that PS3 was dead

I meant it was gonna be difficult for Sony to make a better system.

WiiU sales haven't taken off yet
