Therefore, the appropriate comparison would be the game running at 1080p in a 1080p monitor vs. the game running at 4K in a 4K monitor, assuming that the quality of the screen panels is comparable.
Under that scenario, the improvement in the 4K image should be subtle due to the differences in aliasing and texture sharpness that NaturalViolence described. The emulator will not create additional geometry or higher resolution textures from the original material to make your face truly melt.
If you are seeing a huge difference by rendering the game in a 4K resolution vs 1080p, on a 1080p monitor, then perhaps something else is different in the two settings.

Are you using any type of AA in both cases? I do see a difference when rendering at 3x (~1080p), using 4xAA vs. none. Higher levels of AA do not make much difference in my eyes.
