When I try to start Super Smash Bros. Melee on Dolphin 3.0 rev. 601, the starting screen gets gray and it says clearing code cache, then waits for a bit and crashes. Dolphin 64 bit just plain does not run at all, it told me it needed a DLL file so I downloaded it and then it says "The application was unable to start correctly" (which is not something that is very useful at all.

Is it the game that is the problem or Dolphin? I only have the one game right now, a friend gave it to me, so unfortunately I can't tell you if other games work.

Don't download random *.dll files from the internet, you can easily mess up your system.

Anyway, try to install the Microsoft Restributable Package 2010. Here ya go -> http://www.dolphin-emu.org/faq.html

For the 32-bit version try deleting the contents of the user/shadercache folder
Though i doubt it'll work since you havnt played anything before

I hope your friend was nice enough to give you the physical copy of the game and not an ISO because that's piracy otherwise.
If it is an original legit physical copy and you ripped it to an ISO yourself with either your Wii or a compatible DVD drive then it's another story.

As for your problem, you probably have to redump the game. I swear I have heard of this issue before and it was helped by redumping the game, at least that gray clearing code cache freeze crash I think.

But have you tried other versions of Dolphin just to make sure?

I have a physical copy of the game, somewhere, buried under a load of others. I can find it and take a picture if I really need to...

Yeah, being a brand new installation there'd be nothing in there to mess up.. I'm updating the runtime stuff as per the FAQ. Thank you for the link, I'll edit my post and we'll see if it works.

edit: That did the trick! It stutters ever so slightly, but it's good enough. Thank you for the help Smile

As long as things is legit you don't have to post an image of the actual game.

Is version 3.0 rev 601 the first version of Dolphin you have ever used?
If else fails, I'd recommend using the latest official release aka 3.0, this version works great with it.

Yes it's perfectly fine.

Here's the thread for it:
http://forums.dolphin-emu.org/showthread.php?tid=374

But if you want one right away you could always head to GameFaqs Super Smash Bros. Melee saves section here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/gamecube/516492-...elee/saves

Grab a .gci (GameCube USB Memory Adapter Save) and import it via Dolphins Memory Card manager.

Is it the same way with Wii game saves? I'm going to try dumping my copy of Mario Strikers Charged tomorrow, and I'll need a save file... can I just grab the wii save file from there? Will I need a Wiimote to play that game? I hope not, it makes minimal use of the motion controls (pointing to block megastrikes and shaking to hit players, and I have no way to connect a Wiimote to my PC)

Well not entirely but almost. You import Wii saves via Dolphin with the Data.bin file I believe.

Here's a good spot for Mario Strikers Charged:

As for the controls question try with an emulated Wiimote and set the corresponding buttons to either the keyboard or a game pad if you're using one of those.
