Depends on the DPI your using compared to theoretical DPI of such models AON3 imagined. If the difference is quite significant, you'll need to blow up the bitmapped elements a lot more than just what you've tested with. Keep in mind, I specifically mentioned bitmap elements. Many GUIs have elements that scale really easily with size, but there are plenty of sticking points that are missing, largely the aforementioned icons, not just for file types and such, but for everything that uses a simple 2D image (contol panel stuff, icons you find in apps, etc). With Win8 Metro, it might not be an issue (not that hard to scale a couple of squares) but anything that uses already small 2D bits of graphics will suffer if you enlarge them. Of course, you can leave them be, though things will still look "small". Unity on a MBPR looks absolutely terrible when it's that tiny. I think there's definitely a reason why Apple requires devs to have all of their bitmap images available in twice their native resolution for Mountain Lion.

I'm just not happy that through their ability to decide to do something and do it, apple have overtaken Windows in screen quality.

That's because microsoft is a software company (mostly) and builds tools for other developers to use (mostly). Blame the hardware manufacturers. The more appropriate response would be "apple computers have overtaken all other personal computers in screen quality", it really has nothing to do with windows.

So does bootcamped Windows work at that kind of resolution on the new macbook pro? I thought we'd decided that icons became either blurry or too small etc., as Windows doesn't like that kind of resolution at that DPI.

Although I agree that hardware manufacturers are more to blame than Microsoft.
