I am already aware of this. However, if you upload a large enough PNG it'll actually encode it to JPEG.
For example, here's a 2.14MB PNG image:

When I upload it to Imgur, it gives me this:

Right away without even viewing the image I can see that the filesize of the latter image is only 253KBs so the image was definitely re-encoded, and the JPEG artifacts only confirm that.
