2 Player 1 Controller Netplay?

I am trying to play Pikmin with my friend over netplay where he controls the right side of the controller and I control the left at the same time. Is it possible to do this? We were speculating that we could do it if we put both controllers into the same port, but we weren't able to. Anything that I can do?
