Yeah, tablets and smartphones, have pretty much wiped out any demand for netbooks for people wanting a cheap, always on device mostly for internet activities. I would like to see more nettops in the coming year, especially since Intel's next line of Atom CPUs is getting a facelift in terms of performance. 05-27-2013, 01:24 PM
I thought the market share for netbooks was still growing? I certainly seem to be seeing a lot more of them these days. Also ultrabooks are very similar to netbooks. I still think nettops are a viable option, especially as a home server or htpc. The hardware just isn't quite there yet.

I'm probably just judging by how much I hear about netbooks in the Linux community online and in magazines. Linux Format did several reviews and round-ups of the best netbooks one year. 2008-2010 seems to be when everyone was really excited about the potential prospects of netbooks, but recently, I haven't heard much of anything from them. I consider ultrabooks what netbooks should have been in terms of battery life, performance, and portability, and now I think prices are starting to come down on a lot of models, so I'm pleased with the way that category is progressing. But I'm almost certain tablets and smartphones have stolen a lot (and more) of the spotlight that netbooks were supposed to have; at least googling "death of the netbook" doesn't make things look hopeful. I'm just waiting for a good nettop based on Silvermont, again, in hopes of getting a better emu-console. I've decided to hold off on any machines based on current Atom chips (and not so current ones too, obviously). I was tempted by one nettop from Acer that had a Sandy Bridge Celeron 887, but the reviews I've gathered from newegg and elsewhere kind of tempered my enthusiasm.
Yep, netbooks are dead. Tablets took their place as the "secondary/tertiary computer for limited tasks with great battery life and good portability" machine. Ultrabooks are completely different: they are about providing good performance, small frames, yet good battery life at a high price, a combination that did not exist for any price before the Macbook Air. I would say the closest thing to the original netbook that still exists is the Chromebooks. But the mini laptops with the 8in screens, Windows OS, and super low price? Gone.
Good riddance I say. Netbooks sucked. Windows just did not like their crappy hardware, and the keyboards were a pain in the rear. Intel Xeon w7-3465X OC | Asus Pro WS W790-E Sage SE | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 FE | 8x16GiB G-Skill Zeta R5 DDR5-6000 | Windows 11 22H2 | (details)
