Get a Duo Core, the E8500/E8600 and overclock it to 4,0 GHz, it will give you great speed on Dolphin.

lol id go with quad core cuz you can still check the dual core in dolphin and get a speed boots
Intel® Core2 duo CPU 2.40 GH NVIDIA geforce 9700 GT 6.00GB RAM Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit laptop or Ubuntu 64 bit linux system (just installed )
Nvidia 9600 gtm oc core clock: 500>610 shader clock: 1250>1525 memory clock:400>510 my laptop = BeAsT!! url=http://www.fallensword.com/?ref=4330516][/url]
Wow, you people can't spell. It's dual. Not duel or duo. tbh, I can't trust any of you with overclocking without posting back with "you broke my computer."

go with quad. i have an amd athlon II x2 550 and a motherboard with a bios to unlock 2 extra cores making it a quad. now an amd phenom II x4 B50 3.1ghz OC to 3.5 ghz on air, it utilizes dolphin with 2 cores automatically with the other cores for background services and like they said, futureproof. btw, its multiplier unlocked and very overclockable. very affordable combos on newegg. 90% chance of unlocking the $100 dual into a quad. combos that are $150 will get u a great performing mobo like a gigabyte one. add a very powerful gtx 260 maxcore (most powerful 260 version) and ull see lol

Just to add some numbers based on Ceaseless' comment. I have an i7 920 (4 processors, +4 hyperthread processors) and notice that when "lock threads to core" is checked my machine uses 25% CPU (2 processors completely maxed) when I uncheck "lock threads to core" then my CPU is 28-30%. The reason that I can see is that Dolphin uses the 2 cores completely for itself for core emulation. HLE/DSound takes a core for 0-5% and DXD9 (I'm using the DX plugin) takes one for 0 - 2%. As a side note it also spreads out the load better to avoid using the 4 hyperthread processors where locking uses 1 normal plus 1 ht processor which is the same core on the CPU which is probably less desirable since they will be sharing resources.
Based on this I'd say at least that 4 cores do provide a little extra boost. I think it does work slightly better with less popping in the sound though that could just be my imagination. Whether its worth the extra money though is another discussion. 09-15-2009, 12:58 PM

I want to spend 150 max for the new processor, should I buy an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400, 4x 2.67GHz or an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (C0), 2x 3.16GHz? I'm not so much into overclocking ._. I have a core2duo at home and a core2quad at work rated at the same 2.67 Ghz. Personally, I've found the core2quad to have a better performance with heavy loaded games, like Mario Kart Wii or Mario Galaxy. However, those extra ghz are appealing. I'll go quad in the end, specially because Dolphin may use extra cores in the future (call me crazy but it could happen) Rig *Corei5 3570K *Nvidia 9800GT 1GB DDR3 *Motherboard Asus P8H77M-PRO *Win7 x64 *RAM 8GB DDR3(1600) |
